COW PRINT BEDDING

I’m no cowgirl and hardly know one end of a cow from the other but cow print bedding intrigues me. For one thing, I like the black and white print fabric that reminds of the boxes those computers that used to be delivered to your door were packed in for shipping. The other thing is I like country bedroom themes and cows can be part of that in a completely non-western kind of way.

When a teenage girl recently told me that she wanted a country style bedroom with cow bedding, my immediate response was “What kind”? The poor girl looked at me like I was out of my ever loving mind. I then launched my (all but) canned speech on how there is cow print bedding and then there was, well, cow print bedding. If she thought she was confused earlier in our conversation regarding her bedroom’s decor, she KNEW she was in deep water by this stage of the game.

I then explained to her without sounding the least bit condescending that there were cow print fabrics that were manufactured to look like a cow’s hide and then there were fabrics with pictures of cows printed on them.
As this girl was living on a ranch, I felt sure that she probably wanted the former rather than the latter but when it comes to decorating teen girls’ bedrooms you just never know so it is better to ask and be totally sure! I can only imagine what might have happened if I had assumed she wanted something cute and colorful rather than imitation cowhide. Well, she just might have had a cow!

COWGIRL BEDDING

I don’t know about you, but I prefer the girls cowgirl bedding sets that I use in my bedroom decorating projects to be easily identified as feminine. In other words, I don’t care for completely gender neutral horse theme bedding sets.

And, frankly, there have been times when one lone comforter in pink was the best I could come up with no matter how far and wide I cast my net. How sad it is that manufacturers apparently make the assumption that all ladies who ranch (compared to ladies who lunch) are tomboys that don’t mind coming home to a bedroom decorated in a cowboy theme rather than a pretty set of cowgirl bedding.

There’s a place for horseshoes, cowboy hats, boots and of course pictures of your favorite horse in the bedroom of a girl who loves to barrel race, farm or dreams of farming. But I have often wondered how could a little lace in addition to the leather possibly hurt? The horse loving girls that I know would not mind some white eyelet on the edge of their bandanas a bit. A hot pink bandana print bedding set with a white or cream eyelet bed skirt and curtains are what I have in mind for the next teenage girl’s bedroom who says she wants cowgirl bedding. If she balks and says that my cowgirl decorating ideas are too girly, you will be the first to know that I was wrong. HORSE COMFORTERS - A HORSE LOVING TEEN GIRL'S DREAM

GIRLS HORSE BEDDING SET

Horse comforters are nothing new for cowboys or cowgirls, but you have to admit that
bedding and comforter sets with horse prints have always had a predominantly masculine color scheme. Not so very long ago colors in horse bedding for girls could hardly be distinguished from comforter sets for boys' bedrooms. Now we see cute girls horse bedding sets with feminine details beyond horseshoes and leather tack.

When it came to decorating a horse bedroom for teenage girls, the best that we could do would be to brighten the room with some light, neutral colored window treatments and floor coverings to prevent the browns and blacks associated with the leather of the horse tack and horseshoe motifs from making the room dark as the inside of a barn and a whole lot less cheerful.

Thankfully, some fabric designer realized that the color of saddle leather and black iron looked fabulous when combined with shades of purple, lavender and pink or even yellow! Teenage girls don't have the need to get their horse comforters and bedding sets in the form of patchwork quilts or duvet covers and shams that have to be custom made any longer to be able to get a horse design on their barrel racing tween or pre-teen girl's horse bedding. Even inexpensive bed in a bag sets come with pictures of horses on the bedding and accessories. Your daughter can have a bedroom decorated in pretty ponies and you get the color scheme you dreamed of for her. It's a winner to all concerned parties.

Ideas for WESTERN FAUX SUEDE BEDDING

"Where do I find some really cool western bedding that doesn't scream COWGIRL or COWBOY?"

You will have to do it with color, pattern and pictures. Some nicely textured fabrics will help you out, too. Course woven Indian blankets, some decorative items rather than western or southwestern pictures would be better if you don't want to shout out the Old West theme in a teen's bedroom.

A WESTERN OR SOUTHWESTERN COLOR SCHEME for a BEDROOM

Some colors that would work might be:
  • Rosy browns like russet, shades of chocolate brown as well as tan. You know, the colors your find in the earth, sand colors
  • Subdued greens like sage
  • If you want to cool it all down, indigo blue will do the trick, but keep it to a minimum and use it for accent only.

PATTERNS and SHAPES

To see what patterns and shapes would work in your theme, study the designs that the original inhabitants, the American Indians, used for their beading and blankets.

HORSE THEME DECORATING IDEAS and BEDDING

For the tweens and teens shopping for bedding sets who believe they are too mature for pink bedrooms, here is a set of horse theme bedding in earthy shades of brown and sage green. The bedding set is cheap enough and they are even throwing in some free stuff. I don't ever think I can recall free stuff being included rather than the offer of a discounted price or free shipping. That's truly wild, isn't it?

Anyway, the horse theme bedding fabrics have pretty pictures of horses in natural poses on a field of light tan. The bedskirt and a few of the accent pillows are in a coordinating tan fabric. I think that the plaid prints would be great for a young boy's bedroom and for a tweens room you might want to skip the plaids and opt for something in a solid color. I suppose I'm old fashioned, but plaid prints especially in the color scheme of this set just looks masculine to me.

Whichever decorating ideas you get from the pictures, please choose a better paint color for the walls than they used! What a funky shade of teal blue (or is my monitor acting up)? The Equestrian artwork is ok, but I don't like the way they arranged it. I know that English horsewomen prefer elegant bedroom furnishings and wall decorations, but if rough and ready cowgirls were to use this bedding set, they might prefer some leather tack and rusty horseshoes for their decorative wall groupings!
