What do you think about the bedroom in the picture with the teen girls heart bedding set? I saw a bedroom decorating question regarding this comforter set that got me thinking about how small decorative decisions can take a bedroom's design in one direction or another.

The girl who wrote in said that she loved the polka dot and heart print fabric of the comforter set and the contrasting pattern of the striped bedskirt but didn't like the "dressed up" look of the picture of the bedroom on the bedding set's packaging and wanted to know how to decorate her room in a funky fashion using the girl's heart bedding.

I think I would go for a shabby chic look using a chipped iron bed frame and I would ditch the matching curtains. Just because you buy a bed in a bag doesn't mean you have to use the window treatments. Sell them, toss them or whatever; if you don't like them don't destroy the look of your room just because you feel wasteful. Aluminum foil over the windows is better than buying drapery hardware and taking the time to hang curtains that you hate.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; aqua blue and brown bedding sets are a blessing to long suffering decorators looking for the best combination of earthy and cool, peaceful colors.

It would be impossible for me to say how many times the fabric that I recommended to a client was rejected because it was too busy or chaotic for the restful atmosphere that is desirable for an adult’s bedroom. So, how do we get the results that will appeal to both mother and daughter while operating within the color restrictions that the former laid out for us? For starters, I go shopping for an icy aqua blue and brown bedding set that is as far from anything that a grownup would want as possible. Gathering material for a layout of chocolate brown and blue fabrics covered with paisley, circles, dots and geometric prints to be sewn together in a patchwork quilt is one way to do it. Another is to broaden the range of colors to include some unusual accents in salmon pink and a few pops of white to break things up and draw attention to the bedding set. The rule of thumb for a bohemian bedroom with aqua blue and brown bedding sets or any color whatsoever is to expect the unexpected; in fact the more unique and unusual the better for this theme. But in my case, I have to run all decisions regarding decorations and fabric selection by mom as teens and preteens don’t have a good track record for considering the flow of the home’s decor when decorating their bedrooms.

Aqua or teal green and orange bedding for girls is striking, but throw in some hot pink, floral prints and retro rickrack trim and the look is sure to knock any tween or teen right off her feet. Standing alone the cool shades of blue in the aqua and teal bedroom decorations could hardly be considered memorable much less dramatic. And teenage girls are known to love drama. I ask you, who am I to deny a young girl the decor of her dreams? The problem is figuring out how to make her happy without wrecking the layout of the home’s color palette.

After a walkthrough of a client’s home it was obvious that the mom of twin girls had a love for the cool blues and greens that you might associate with the ocean. It was just as clear to me that the curtains, upholstery fabrics and floor coverings called for some warm colored accents to create a balance. A few throw pillows and decorative items displayed on the tabletops and shelves were all that it took and my client was impressed with the results.

She was so pleased that when I made the bold recommendation of decorating her twins’ bedrooms with bright teal green and orange bedding for girls I got the go ahead without the argument that might have otherwise been forthcoming. This is a perfect example of a time when offering a few hours of decorating advice free of charge pays off big time. The surf’s up and the ocean temps are rising. Requests for aqua bedding sets and aqua bedroom ideas start rolling in almost as predictably and reliably as the ebb and flow of the endless tide. This seasonal color trend in teenage girls’ bedroom decor has yet to miss a year for as long as I’ve been involved in bedroom design.

Even when I lived way up north where summer was so late to arrive that the mention of swimming never occurred to me until late June, teens came back from spring break with the intention of bringing their tropical vacation home with them. You could count on these well traveled young girls having ideas of decorating their bedrooms based on decorations that were used in their rented beach cabana and the many shades of blue they saw reflected in the sea. PATTERNS and PRINTS

Stripes and polka dots have been very popular with this age group but there have been more than a few beach bunnies lately that have chosen blue floral bedding over navy, teal and aqua bedding in plaids, stripes or polka dots. When I say floral, this is not your grandmother’s floral print. These tropical prints are as far from granny’s flowers as a palm leaf is from old fashioned ivy. Splashes and layers of ice blue aqua graphics grounded by teal green and navy are as fresh and bracing as salt spray no matter how many miles you happen to be from the nearest beach or your favorite island.

SHEETS

If your teenage girl likes to mix it up, even with tropical print aqua blue bedding sets, there is still room for a few dots or stripes. THE WALLS

Chocolate and aqua window treatments and bedding sets would have been out of the question earlier in your teenage girl's years. While the modern decorating and color scheme rules have been relaxed by miles, dark browns and shades of blue in the not so distant past were classic ways to decorate a boy's bedroom (read: territory).
